Funding for recording in Highland

We currently have two options for funding recording work: HBRG funds, and a grant from Scottish Natural Heritage.

Conditions apply to both.  The table will help you decide which route is appropriate for you, and advice on how to apply follows.

Condition HBRG funds SNH Grant
There is an existing funding stream for your activity. - -
You are recording outside the Highland Council area. - -
You are an HBRG member. - +
You are recording in the Cairngorms National Park Area. + -
You are recording in remote or poorly-covered areas. + +
You are recording poorly-known species (e.g. invertebrates, fungi, lichens, mosses). + +
You are recording UKBAP species or others on conservation lists (some like Red Squirrel and Capercaillie will not usually qualify). + +
You are prepared to pass records to the HBRG database and NBN Gateway (essential!). + +

If you have doubts about whether your plans qualify, contact the appropriate person (see below).  It may be possible to fund otherwise well-known species in remote areas, for example vascular plants in remote parts.  If you are prepared to collect specimens (e.g. lichens or spiders) for others, while recording birds or Red Squirrels that may also qualify.  Ask advice from the contacts below.

To apply for HBRG funds, download an application form and send it to   or to any committee member.  You must be an HBRG member (join here if not!).

To apply for funding under the SNH grant, contact   .  Conditions for this grant are available here.

Records from any funded work must be passed to HBRG for the taxon database and for transmission to NBN Gateway at full resolution.

A very brief report must be provided before payment is released.

Publications or reports arising from any funded work must acknowledge the funders.
